About chamber size, oh? You may be wondering, so let me explain.
M.C. Gregory has three chamber sizes, 16, 18, and 20, which are generally recognized as small, medium, and large, in that order.
However, this is only a standard within M.C. Gregory’s products, and all of them have extremely low baffles, or minus baffles, so the chamber sizes are one or two ranks larger than those of other companies’ mouthpieces.
The “Model 46” is based on the 4A16,
For this reason, it is described in the flyer as a “medium-large chamber”.
I bow to Shinji Ishimori’s attitude of conveying information accurately.
The chamber space near the Tip is very wide, but it is narrowed down from there with an exquisite curve, so that a step can be easily seen on the inside when viewed from the shank side. This is also a major feature found in the M.C. Gregory 4A16.
In the past, I had tried my best to shave off the baffle of a Vandoren AL5, a small chamber, leaving a step that could be seen from the shank side and adding a depression in the sidewall, which was exactly the act of converting a small chamber into a large chamber.
When you look at this “Model 46” while remembering these processes, you can see beautiful curves all over.

チェンバーサイズについて、おや？と思った方がいるかも知れないので説明します。
M.C. Gregoryには3つのチェンバーサイズ16・18・20があり、順にスモール・ミディアム・ラージという認識が一般的と思う。
だかしかし、これはあくまでもM.C. Gregoryの製品内での基準であり、どれもバッフルが極度のローバッフル、言わばマイナスバッフルとも言える形状であるため、他社のマウスピースと比べると1ランクか2ランク広いチェンバーサイズとなる。
「Model 46」は4A16を元にしているが、
この理由から「ミディアムラージチェンバー」とチラシには表記されています。
情報を正確に伝えていく石森信二さんの姿勢には頭が下がります。
Tip付近のチェンバー空間はダントツで広いが、そこから絶妙なカーブで絞り込まれ、シャンク側から眺めると内側には段差が容易に見て取れるほどになっている。これはM.C. Gregory 4A16に見られる大きな特徴でもあります。
以前僕が、スモールチェンバーであるVandoren AL5を、シャンク側から確認できる段差は残したままバッフルを必死にそぎ落とし、サイドウォールに窪みを付けていた行為は、まさにスモールチェンバーのラージチェンバー化でした。
これらの工程を思い出しつつこの「Model 46」を眺めると実に美しい曲線が至る所に確認できます。
